120 shops and stocks of vegetables destroyed in the blaze

MADURAI: A fire broke out in a vegetable market at K. Pudur here on Friday.

According to police sources, the fire that was noticed at around 3.30 a.m. spread fast to thatched shops and destroyed stocks of vegetables causing substantial loss to farmers and vendors. Rescue and Fire Service personnel extinguished the fire within a couple of hours.

At least 120 shops were gutted in the fire. The Minister for Adi-Dravidar Welfare, Tamilarasi Ravikumar, and Madurai MP, P. Mohan, visited the spot.

The K. Pudur police have registered a case under Section 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intend to cause damage).
