MADURAI: A fire broke out in the premises belonging to the Life Insurance Corporation of India at Chitirai Street branch near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Thursday.

Glass window pane

The security guard suffered multiple injuries when a huge glass window pane broke due to heat and fell on his head from the multi-storeyed building.

Fire and Rescue Service Department officers said that following a fire call received at around 6.45 p.m., two fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

“It took about 45 minutes to put out the fire completely which is suspected to have caught from an air-conditioner unit,” said the District Fire Officer, V. Thooyamani.

Fire officers who supervised the operations said that the multi-storeyed building had not followed fire safety rules as per the norms.

Value not assessed

The value of documents which were destroyed in the fire accident could not be assessed immediately.

Police have registered a case.

The watchman, engaged through outsourcing, was identified as Chandran and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

Further investigation is on.
