CHENNAI: A part of the government-owned Cooptex showroom on Tillaiyadi Valliyamai Pattu Maaligai on Pantheon Road at Egmore in central Chennai was gutted in a fire on Tuesday evening. Officials said that no stocks were lost, nor was any employee hurt in the fire, which destroyed records and furniture.
According to Kanchan Punjabi, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, flames started coming out of a third floor window at 5.10 p.m.
"By the time the police came, employees were standing outside describing the situation to the officials," she said.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue service personnel struggled for an hour to bring the blaze under control as they could not locate the source of the fire immediately. The Divisional Fire Officer (South) V. Vijayakumar said his personnel had to break open the doors and windows to put out the blaze. "One entire hall was gutted. Fifty per cent of the false ceiling was destroyed," he said, after putting out the fire around 7.30 p.m.
