Some had difficulty in breathing, while others reported eye irritation
A fire broke out at a match box package unit here in the early hours of Wednesday. A big unit, belonging to Maheswaran of Coronation Colony and functioning on Big Mosque Street here, which was engaged in packing match sticks into small boxes, and packing small boxes into big bundles for transportation to northern States and export to various countries.
Huge consignments were kept ready for transport/export. Under these circumstances, smoke emanated from the factory at around 4.00 a.m. Power to the entire area was switched off immediately. Fire and Rescue Service team led by the Station Fire Officer Shanmugaraj rushed to the spot.
Muslims on fast in view of Ramzan and proceeding to the mosque in the vicinity for prayers early in the morning had a harrowing experience. Others too had difficulty in breathing. Some reported irritation in their eyes.
It took four hours to put out the fire in full.
The loss was estimated at Rs. 25 lakh. The Town Police and revenue authorities are enquiring into the issue. The cause of the fire was not known immediately.
Fire in SBI office
Meanwhile, a fire erupted at the terrace of a building housing a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the ground floor on Vembakottai Road here around midnight.
Interior decoration work was going on in the bank and waste materials were dumped on the terrace. One of the ‘rockets’ fired in the air in connection with a temple festival on the occasion of “Adi Dhabasu” fell on the waste wooden materials causing instant fire.
There was no damage to the bank, fire officials said.
