Railway officials registered cases against 161 persons and realised fines to the tune of Rs. 57,000 from them following a surprise crackdown against ticketless travel and for carrying excess luggage, at Tirupur railway station, on Saturday and on Sunday.

Sources said the checking was conducted both on the platform and also on board the trains that arrived in the station.

On the cases against excess luggage, the sources added that the fines were levied from people who were travelling with luggage beyond the permissible weights allowed for different classes of bogies and on trains like Doronto and Rajdhani Express.

The season ticket holders who were found travelling with luggage beyond 20 kg, permissible for the said category, were also caught.
