To ensure hassle-free maintenance of sewer lines, Chennai Metrowater is training its field workers in using machinery to clean the drainage network.

About 1,600 workers attached to various area offices in the city will be part of the training camps. On Wednesday, the first such camp was held for 25 field workers at the Royapuram sewage pumping station.

At present, the water agency has 85 jet rodding machines that can remove sewer obstructions without the need for workers to enter manholes. Workers will also get to use 161 desilting machines that can clear silt deposited in manholes that have a depth of up to 32 feet. The workers will also be trained in using the super sucker machines that clean silt through suction. Each worker will be trained to operate these machines with safety equipment, said a press release.
