People offer prayers during midnight masses conducted at various churches
MADURAI: Christmas celebrations swept the city in the early hours of Friday as holy masses were conducted at various churches.
Children dressed themselves up as Santa Claus. The mood of Christmas pervaded every nook and corner of the city as did the ubiquitous pine tree, a must for every Christmas celebration. Shops, bakeries and other outlets had their premises decked brightly to entice the crowd.
At the St. Mary’s Cathedral on East Veli Street, the Madurai Archbishop, Rev. Fr. Peter Fernando, led a mass that commenced in the late hours of Thursday and lasted till the early hours of Friday.
A. Christopher Asir, Madurai-Ramnad Diocese Bishop, Church of South India, conducted a service at CSI Church at Aathikulam. Thousands took part in both the services. Midnight masses were also conducted at churches including Lourdu Church at K. Pudur, Rosary Church on Town Hall Road, St. Joseph’s Church at Gnanaoliupuram, Sacred Heart Church at Railway Colony.
