Thousands of devotees witnessed the feeding of ‘gnana pal' to Sri Thirugnanasambandar, one of the four prime nayanmars in Saivism, by goddess Sri Parvathi at Sri Periyanaki Amman Temple here on Friday. Initially, special pujas were performed to 63 ‘nayanmars.' ‘Shodasobachara abishekam' (16 kinds of abishekam) were performed to the deity of Thirugnanasambandar.

Later, the idol was decorated and mounted on an ivory palanquin for the holy procession.

In the meanwhile, the deities of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi too were mounted on the bull ‘vahanam' and brought to the main mandapam of the temple. All the deities were taken in a procession to Theppakulam presided over by temple elephants.

With ‘othuvars' singing Thevaram hymns and priests chanting mantras, goddess Parvathi brought the milk in a golden bowl and fed it to Thirugnanasambandar with a golden spoon studded with precious stones.

Later, the holy milk was distributed to devotees who witnessed the ceremony. Free feast was also arranged on the temple premises.

A special function will be conducted at Sri Padhavinayagar Temple on Saturday to mark the end of the 14-day ‘Agni Natchatram,' peak summer season in the Chithirai-Vaikasi months.
