TIRUCHI: The Federation of Service and Consumer Organisations has appealed to the district administration to release those who were arrested in connection with the road blockade staged by residents seeking service roads along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway in the city on Tuesday.

Maintaining that providing service roads in urban stretches was mandatory as per the standards for four-laning projects, M. Sekaran, president of the federation, in a representation to the Collector, observed that accidents have become frequent on the highway in the absence of the service roads. Tuesday's road blockade was a spontaneous expression of the grievance and anguish of the residents. It was alleged that some miscreants might have mingled in the crowd to damage public transport vehicles, he said and appealed to the Collector to release the residents and withdraw the charges filed against them.
