A two-year-old boy drowned in an open septic tank in front of his house at a residential complex here on Friday.

Police said the mother and grandmother of the child, R.Surya, were engaged in cooking, when he came out of the house and fell into the septic tank. After a slab got broken, a portion of the 8-feet-deep septic tank, full of sewerage water, remained open for the last three days. It was surprising that none of those living in the 15 houses in the complex bothered to cover it with a cement slab though it remained as a potential danger for children, police said.

Initially, the mother thought the child went missing and after nearly a hour-long search, the body was fished out from the tank after a woman asked a sanitary worker who came to her house to remove a block in the drainage to check in the septic tank.
