For N. Dhanalakshmi (31) of Rahmathullahpuram, got justice when her husband was arrested after she staged a fast unto death along with her one-and-a-half-year -old baby at the Collectorate here on Friday.

The woman said that she married N. Karthikeyan (34) of Housing Board Colony, Ganesh Nagar, on April 1, 2011 at a temple near Chathiram bus station after a five-year relationship with him. But the marriage was not registered. Later, Karthikeyan left her and had married another woman.

A petition seeking action against him was given to the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Tuticorin Town, on January 19.

From the next day, she frequented the All Women police station but no action was taken.

It was then that she staged the fast. Only after the woman stood firm in her resolve that she would not give up her fast was he arrested by the all-woman police under Sections 417, 506 (ii) and 4 of Women Harassment Act.

Earlier, the police tried to remove her from the Collectorate portico, which is out of bounds for protestors. But she refused to budge. Later, they managed to move her to another place and offered counselling.
