``Demands have been pending for long''
CHENNAI: A day-long fast was observed near the Ambattur police station here on Monday to protest the lack of amenities in Ambattur Municipality.
The fast, organised by the Anti-Corruption Awareness Association, was to highlight a list of complaints common to all 52 wards in the Municipality and have been pending for long, members of the association said.
Provision of drinking water connections from the Puzhal and Ambattur lakes, completion of work on the underground drainage system, putting up streetlights, especially in Ambattur Estate, are the principal demands.
Another pressing issue is the relaying of the tarred roads dug up to facilitate the underground drainage work.
The association wants the Municipality to lay stress on hygienic practices and be more environment friendly. Expanding Ambattur OT bus stand to provide space for buses, establishing a high school for boys and a general hospital within municipality limits and establishing a market for roadside vendors are other proposals to improve amenities in the area.
The Association has alleged that officials demanded heavy bribes for approvals for houses and demanded that offenders be severely punished.
