NAGAPATTINAM: Farmers in the Cauvery delta region of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, have appealed to the Government to introduce monopoly paddy procurement in the delta during the current samba season.

They also sought relaxation of grade norms like Punjab and procure paddy from the farmers and revive the agricultural production incentive to the those who sell their paddy to the Government.

S.Ranganathan, a progressive farmer of Mannargudi and general secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, told The Hindu on Saturday that paddy prices were now falling and the private traders were buying the paddy at the rock bottom price of Rs.300 per bag of 60 kg that worked out Rs.five per kg of paddy while the Government's price is Rs.600 per quintal.He pointed out that the quality of paddy harvested in majority areas in the delta was good except in the rain and flood-affected areas where the chaff content was present in the paddy. He urged the Government to procure paddy from the farmers at the Direct Purchase Centres of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation without causing hardship to the farmers.He wanted the Government to revive the agricultural production incentive of Rs.40 per quintal.
