ERODE: Representatives of the Farmers' Association will contest the coming elections to cooperative societies and local bodies. This was decided at the monthly meeting of the Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam (K. Chinnasamy Group), held here on June 1. Its district president E.R. Kumarasamy presided over the meeting.

In a resolution, the sangam welcomed the State Government's announcement on waiver of farm loans. It demanded the Government to waive all the farm loans borrowed by farmers from Nationalised Banks and Land Development Banks.

The meeting appealed to the Government to allow toddy tapping. The meeting demanded that milk procurement price be increased by Re. 1 a litre.

The meeting said that from 1960 to 2004, electricity supply was provided to wells near the Kuranganodai in the district and `No Objection Certificate' (NOC) from the PWD was not required. But in 2004, the PWD officials wrote a letter to the Electricity Board, stating that electricity connections should be provided only after getting NOC from the PWD. Because of this hundreds of farmers were affected. The meeting demanded the Government to relax the rule.

It wanted reduction in sugarcane cutting and lorry transportation charges.
