Demanding free house site pattas for poor farm labourers, the members of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam staged a sit-in protest in front of Kovilpatti tahsildar office here on Wednesday.

K.P. Perumal, district secretary, who led the agitation, demanded government authorities to issue free house site pattas for 60 people living in Kayatar and house site pattas for 40 others in the area.

Stressing these demands, he said the needy had been agitating since November 25 in Kovilpatti but the objective of the agitation could not be achieved as officials did not respond to the demands.

T.V. Ramesh, Tahsildar of Kovilpatti, when contacted, said that 44 applications seeking free house site pattas had been submitted and out of which only eight applicants were eligible for availing such pattas, he said.

He said suitable land was not available for them to provide as of now.

He also added that 228 house site pattas had been provided to beneficiaries under Kovilpatti taluk on September 28.
