TIRUCHI: Vehicular traffic on the Tiruchi – Karur national highway was hit after farmers of various villages resorted to a road roko at Mutharasanallur near here on Wednesday morning demanding the release of water in the ‘pudhuvathalai’ vaikkal to save paddy crop.
Led by Communist Party of India-Marxist farmers wing district secretary C. Masilamani, the road roko agitation disrupted vehicular traffic on the national highway during the peak hour in the morning for over two hours. The road roko agitation commenced at around 8.30 a.m. with farmers from nearly 10 villages assembling on the highway blocking traffic in support of their demand and seeking its implementation. Police and revenue officials immediately rushed to the spot on receipt of information to pacify the agitating farmers. Following an assurance from the officials that steps would be taken to release water in the ‘pudhuvaithalai’ vaikkal, the agitating farmers gave up their stir.
