To press various demands
Udhagamandalam: Under the aegis of the Vivasaiyigal Thozilalargal Munnetra Sangam (VTMS), a demonstration was staged by farmers in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. Leading the demonstration the District Secretary of the association R.Vanachandran said that it was in protest against denial of benefits to many of the farmers in Gudalur under a subsidy scheme, which had been implemented by the State Government a few years ago.
Asking the government to modernise the Industrial Cooperative Tea Factories, he said that the factories which have been closed should be re-opened. Ailing tea gardens should be taken over by the government and the interests of the workers protected. A minimum support price of Rs. 15 a kg of raw tea leaves should be fixed. Efforts should be made to check the exodus of people from here to the plains in search of employment.
Employment opportunities should be created here. Factories should be set up in the Nilgiris in general and Gudalur in particular.
The Tribal and Forest Dwellers bill should cover the entire district.
