They raise slogans pressing their demands
TIRUNELVELI: Landless small and marginal farmers and farmhands staged a demonstration in front of the taluk offices across the district on Tuesday demanding free house site pattas and two acres of land.
They raised slogans demanding free house site pattas to the homeless poor farmers and farmhands and two acres of cultivable land.
Since most of the farmhands had come to the protest venue under the impression that free house pattas would be distributed, they could be seen enquiring the reporters about the place and time.
They became very much frustrated as the media personnel replied that they had been mobilised there only for protest and not for receiving gift from the government.
Members of the All India Kissan Sabha staged a demonstration in front of the taluk office situated along Tuticorin-Kollam highway, on Tuesday. They urged the district administration to issue house site pattas to people below poverty line residing on poromboke land for long.
Similarly, distribution of two acre land free to all landless agricultural labourers should be expedited. S. Sankarasubbu, district secretary of AIKS, K.S.Arjunan, town secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), T. Kumaravel, district secretary of CITU, and M.S.Muthu, town secretary of DYFI, spoke. Meanwhile, traffic along Victoria Extension road was disrupted for a while after the residents of Mela Shanmugapuram resorted to road roko in the morning.
They said that drinking water supply to their area had been ‘erratic’ for long despite representing the grievance to municipal officials concerned on many occasions. The crowd dispersed only after a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Town sub-division) pacified them.
Farmers in different parts of the district staged a demonstration in front taluk offices at Agastheeswram, Thovalai, Kalkulam and Vilavancode.
