RAMANATHAPURAM: Farmers of several villages in different parts of Ramanathapuram district on Monday thronged the Collectorate seeking compensation for the standing paddy crop failure.
In a representation given to Collector T.N. Hariharan, M. Muthuramu, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam said though the farmers of 7 firkas in Thiruvadanai and Devipattinam firka initially expected good harvest, sudden affliction of various diseases dampened the spirit. The farmers were totally dejected due to poor yield. The farmers, who faced heavy expenditure for raising the paddy crop by availing loan even from private lenders, were facing a tough time.
Hence, he demanded that the government should announce a compensation of Rs.15,000 per acre to the farmers.
Similarly, the farmers of Attankudi, Guyavanendhal, Marudhu and Gunankulam villages in Nainarkoil firka also met the Collector with the paddy crops affected with diseases.
