TIRUCHI: The Cauvery Delta Farmer's Welfare Association has urged the authorities not to establish the integrated bus stand at Devadhanam. A resolution to this effect was adopted at its meeting held recently.

It said the State Government had shot down the proposal to construct an integrated bus stand at Devadhanam on the grounds that it would result in waste being dumped and sewage water being let into the Cauvery.

Allowing the establishment of the bus stand near the Oyyamari cremation ground would result in a large number of buses plying on the banks of the Cauvery, which would ultimately weaken its embankments.

Acquiring land from the farmers for the bus stand was not justified, it said.

Instead, the authorities should explore the possibility of acquiring military land near the Central bus stand here for its expansion.

It would be ideal for the bus stand to remain near the railway junction, as it would be easy for the public to board train or bus to reach their destination.
