ERODE: Farmers in Erode demanded increase in procurement price of cow milk at least by Rs. 3 and Rs 6 buffalo milk a litre.

LBP Ryots Association at its meeting held here on Wednesday said that the milk procurement price was not revised after 1.6.2004 and despite many requests and representations to the then District Collector, who was the Chairman of the Erode Milk Producers Cooperative Union, no revision was made.

But recently private milk dairies increased the selling price of milk by Rs. 2 a litre and also gave more procurement price to farmers.

Milk producers of Erode held a demonstration recently. LBP Ryots Association by another resolution expressed its concern over the growing pollution problem in Erode district and urged the Collector to instruct textile and tanning industries not to discharge untreated effluents into the drains or canals, as the ground water has already been polluted.

The meeting also requested the Tamil Nadu Government to lay a pipeline from Mettur Reservoir to Erode and all other villages, which were getting the Cauvery water for drinking purpose.

Regarding the Union budget proposal, the meeting said instead of providing a reasonable price for agricultural commodities, the loan amount had been increased to Rs 2.50 lakh crore to the farming sector. The Government should fix parity price for the agricultural commodities, they said.
