A section of farmers and activists have alleged that despite repeated appeals, the authorities were carrying out selective demolition of encroached structures situated along the circumference of Aandipalayam irrigation tank.

The bund strengthening and rejuvenation works to increase the water holding capacity were presently under way in the tank area.

K. Palanisamy, a maize and vegetable farmer who has land holding in the command area of the tank, told reporters that an industrial unit which had encroached into four poromboke plots on the banks of the tank were not removed during the recent eviction drive.

“Because of this, continuity of transport is not there along the entire stretch of the service road situated on the circumference of the tank,” he said.

According to the activists, the officials of various departments like Public Works and Revenue have removed only four huts and certain minor unauthorised structures from the area till now.
