CHENNAI: The cab driver who allegedly escaped with Rs.20 lakh in cash belonging to the State Bank of Travancore used a fake driving licence, police said on Thursday.
The case pertains to the incident in which a cab driver of Puducherry drove away with Rs.1 crore in cash kept in a metal box after giving a slip to two SBT employees at Injambakkam on East Coast Road on Tuesday.
“He had told the travel agency in Puducherry that his name is Muthukumar. The accused used the driving licence of one of his friends whose name is Muthukumar. His mobile phone was taken in the name of some other person,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thoraipakkam) K.N. Murali sad.
A special team that went to Puducherry found that he had given fake particulars about his identity and family background. “We found a long knife in the car used by the accused.
His image has been recorded in the SBT head office in Chennai when he came on an earlier occasion,” Mr. Murali added.
Case against driver
The Royapettah police have registered a case against a call taxi driver on charges of misbehaving with a woman belonging to the Netherlands.
J. Pianca (40), a research scholar, hired a cab to reach a hotel on R.K. Salai on Tuesday night. Near the Music Academy, the driver allegedly tried to misbehave with her. “A special team formed to investigate the case detained one Vijayakumar (27) of Perunkalattur for interrogation,” DCP (Mylapore) K. Periaiah said.
A couple fell into a well and died in Peerkankaranai near Tambaram on Thursday. Police said Ponnusamy (28) and his wife Sophia (23) were living in Kamaraj Nagar. On Thursday, Sophia is reported to have climbed on the well inside their house and threatened to jump into it. Ponnusamy rushed to prevent her from jumping in, but both of them fell inside and died.
