If Chennai Corpn. can do it why not Salem, they ask
SALEM: The Salem Corporation’s failure to remove the iron scaffoldings and girders of unauthorised hoardings in the city has invited criticism from the people.
The civic body initiated a drive to remove unauthorised hoardings in the city a few months ago.
A number of such hoardings were brought down during the drive. But the civic workers failed to pull down the iron scaffoldings after removing the advertisement boards and sheets fitted in them in several parts of the city. These structures are spoiling the cityscape, the residents complain.
In cities such as Chennai, the civic workers themselves have pulled down the scaffoldings and girders while removing the advertisement boards. They used gas cutters to remove the structures. When Chennai Corporation can remove the scaffoldings, why not the Salem Corporation do it? the people ask.
The Salem Corporation directed the advertisers to remove the scaffoldings instead of using its own workforce during the drive.
But the advertisers had failed to follow the civic body’s direction. As a result, many of the scaffoldings and girders still remain in several parts on the city.
The iron scaffoldings may fall at anytime, as they are exposed to sun and rain. The vehicle users are facing the risk, as several scaffoldings are erected close to the road, people say.
The civic officials are lethargic even in the removal of unauthorised hoardings. Hundreds of such hoardings can still be seen in many parts of the city, the residents say.
Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy said that the civic body had asked the advertisers to remove the scaffoldings and girders within a week.
If they fail to do so, the Corporation will remove the structures and the expenses will be collected from the advertisers concerned, he said.
