Tirupur: The knitwear exporters here have sought the Finance Commission to constitute an exclusive Market Development Fund for the promotion of products developed from Tirupur knitwear cluster, with a corpus of Rs. 1,000 crore.

The appeal was made by G. Karthikeyan, general secretary of Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), during his meeting with the members of 13th Finance Commission headed by its Chairman Vijay Kelkar in Chennai on June 4.

Mr. Karthikeyan pointed out that the cluster-specific fund should be utilised to subside the expenditure incurred by the exporters from the cluster, which contributed over Rs. 10,000 crore of foreign exchange to the country’s exchequer, for taking part in the buyer-seller meets, export promotion seminars and trade fairs held both in the country and abroad. “Participation in such trade promotion events will help the entrepreneurs here widen their client base substantially thereby realise the targeted export turnover of Rs. 25,000 crore from the cluster by 2012,” he said.

The TEA general secretary requested the Finance Commission members to recommend for allocation of funds to construct at least five working women’s hostels in Tirupur to provide accommodation to the migrant women workers based in the cluster. He also urged the Commission members to consider the pleas of textile exporters for a dedicated power station for Tirupur knitwear cluster.

To ensure speedy movement of foreign-bound textile cargoes from Tirupur to Tuticorin port, four-lane roads should be laid on the stretch.
