2-day conference on sex ratio imbalance to be held alongside
Handicrafts of different styles, phenyl sold out of plastic bottles, food items and leather goods are all on sale at the Vatsalya Mela.
The Pondicherry State Social Welfare Board, which comes under the Central Social Welfare Board, Ministry of Women and Child Development is organising the exhibition to promote various women's NGOs and Self Help Groups from across Puducherry.
With over 50 stalls selling a variety of products including handicrafts, toys, jewellery and even household cleaners, the exhibition aims at promoting the lot of several women from underprivileged backgrounds as well as rural artisans. Along with the exhibition, there is also a two-day conference on the impact of the imbalance in sex ratio, with several experts talking about the importance of a balanced sex ratio. In India, the average sex ratio is around 870 girls for every 1000 boys, which needs to improve rapidly if the country needs to feature as a world power, according to Assistant Project Officer of the State Social Welfare Board.
The conference deals with topics such as female infanticide, foeticide and other issues pertaining to the development of women.
The exhibition and workshop is taking place at the Mangalakshmi Thirumana Nilayam ending on Sunday.
Products including handicrafts, toys, jewellery and household cleaners will be available at around 60 stalls
