A three-day exhibition of women Self-Help Group products began at the Nehru Auditorium on Bose Maidan here on Saturday. Mayor S. Soundappan inaugurated the exhibition that will go on till Monday.
Thirty seven stalls were put up by the SHGs that are functioning in the Corporation. Saris, dress materials for women, ornamental items, slippers, hand bags, home needs and eatables occupied a major portion of the exhibition.
The Mayor said that Rs. 4,62,96,000 had been given away as subsidy for the SHGs in Salem Corporation for self employment schemes. “A total of 5,250 women, who are members of 476 SHGs, have benefited through this scheme. This is in addition to a subsidy of Rs. 1,12,60,000 through revolving funds for 1,126 SHGs. A total of 16,230 women have benefited through this subsidy,” he added.
Stressing on the need to educate girl children and improve the literacy rate among women, the Mayor highlighted the various schemes and efforts taken by the State Government and the Corporation to achieve these goals.
