CHENNAI: A person belonging to a fundamentalist organisation, who was wanted in connection with a case relating to seizure of explosives at Kodungaiyur here in 2002, has been arrested.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the State Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB CID) arrested Mohammed Imran alias Imran (30) at the Tiruchirappalli Central Bus Stand on Sunday.

The X Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, on Monday remanded him to custody.

The police said members belonging to the Muslim Defence Force (MDF) were arrested in 2002 by the Chennai City Police in connection with the seizure of explosives near the Rajaratnam Nagar bridge in Kodungaiyur police station limits. A case was registered under section 5, 9 (B) (1) (a) of the Explosive Substances Act and 120 (b) IPC.

Later, the case was transferred to the SIT, which investigated it further. Twenty persons were facing trial in a Special Court for bomb blast cases at Poonamallee.

In another case in 2002, the police seized explosive substances at Mallipattinam, Thanjavur district, from two persons. The police said Imran had given them the explosives for safe custody.
