: Though Deepavali brings joy, fun and togetherness, thanks to colourful fireworks, new clothes and sweets, it is also the festival, which should be celebrated with all safety measures.

According to the information available with the Fire and Rescue Services office, each fire station attended an average of 7 calls during the last Deepavali.

Most of them were related to fire and cracker accidents. There were incidences in the past in which children sustained serious burns and injuries caused by wrong use of fireworks. It had not only caused discomfort to the affected persons but also spoiled the fun in many families.

“ Fire accidents invariably occur when kids are allowed to play with fireworks unattended. The most common reason is wrong handling of fireworks. Parents need to take some precautions to avoid such tragedies. It is important to know the difference between a legal consumer firework and a dangerous explosive device,” says M. Radhakrishnan, District Fire Officer.

He added that there were tendencies among the boys who think that fireworks were toys. Awareness among children must be created that fireworks were not toys. They had to be handled with proper care, guidelines and instructions printed on the cover of the fireworks.

A. Samiraj, Station Fire Officer, said that parents must never allow young children to handle fireworks without close adult supervision as even seemingly harmless sparklers and ‘flower pots' could be dangerous for young kids, especially to those under age of five.

There were views among the experts that most of the accidents involving fireworks were due to the usage of unbranded and locally made fireworks. Many of the fire manufacturers, particularly local ones, didn't pay much importance to follow standards and safety features basically due to cost effective factor. “Most of the non branded and poor quality fireworks can cause havoc, if proper attention is not paid. Poorly manufactured rockets can shoot off into non-intended directions to injure people and even enter homes to set things inside on fire. It is important for the adults to closely monitor their children while they engage themselves in firework display,” another officer added.
