CHENNAI: The Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association (IEMA) has asked Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to exempt micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from payment of infrastructure and amenities charges.

In a memorandum sent to Mr. Stalin, IEMA stated that a recent Housing and Urban Development Department government order specifying payment of Rs.150 to Rs.300 per square metre as infrastructure and amenities charges would include MSMEs.

Since the MSME sector had been severely hit by recession and entrepreneurs were finding it difficult to even pay wages to employees, the IEMA requested Mr. Stalin to exempt the sector from these levies.

The memorandum also said that MSMEs on the Guindy industrial estate were being subjected to double taxation in the form of maintenance charges payable to Metrowater and SIDCO. The IEMA requested Mr. Stalin to ensure that this practice was discontinued immediately.
