CHENNAI: E-tickets, now available in the Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Jan Shatabdi Express, will be extended to all superfast trains of Indian Railways from the New Year.

E-tickets, also known as e-reservation, will now be available in 25 superfast trains, including the Pandiyan, Vaigai, Pallavan, Kanyakumari, Nellai and Pothigai Expresses starting from Chennai Egmore, and in the Dadar Express, the Pinakini Express, the Bangalore Mail, the Thiruvananthapuram Mail, the Bangalore Mail and the Cheran Express originating from Chennai Central. The service will be available in these trains in the return direction too.

The service, provided by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), will enable passengers to get reservation from their homes at the click of the mouse.

To get the service, IRCTC officials said, passengers had to log on to www.irctc.co.in and book their ticket by selecting "e-ticket" in the "Plan my travel page." The photo identity card details of any one of the passengers had to be given. On confirmation of booking, passengers could take a print of the electronic reservation slip (ERS). They were permitted to travel with the ERS and the photo identify card.

At present, only confirmed/reservation against cancellation tickets can be booked through e-reservation. Voter identity card, passport, PAN, driving licence and government identify cards are valid identity cards. The names of passengers who booked e-tickets would be included in the reservation chart.

The officials said the passenger had to necessarily carry the same identity card which he mentioned at the time of booking. An additional Rs. 40 would be charged per ticket.

e-ticket would become more popular than booking ticket through the Internet, as passengers could get the ticket immediately. Under the Internet booking, passengers would have to wait at least a day to get their tickets through courier. For more information, passengers could access www.irctc.co.
