Ten estate workers, mostly women, were injured when a jeep in which they were travelling fell into a deep gorge after the rear wheel tyre burst at Mandhavaikal near Lower Camp, on Wednesday.

Of these, five grievously injured women and two men, all native of Gudalur, were referred to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital while others were treated at Cumbum GH.

They were returning to Gudalur after their work in cardamom estates at Chakkupallam in Idukki district. More than 500 jeeps are shuttling to Idukki from Cumbum, Kamayagoundanpatti, Gudalur, Cumbum Pudhupatti, Kombai every day to transport workers to the estates and bring them back home.
