These will help farmers get better price: Chamber

POLLACHI: Pollachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) on Sunday appealed to the State Government to establish an agriculture-based export zone in Pollachi to give a fillip to the region.

The Chamber's 25th annual general meeting, presided over by its president, M. Appusamy, decided to conduct agriculture-related seminars as the sector was doing extremely well in the last two years. The Government should set up agriculture-based industries here to help farmers get better price and to generate employment.

Following the success of the Trade Show last year, the meeting decided to conduct a similar show to educate the public on the latest technologies in agriculture this December.

The Chamber asked the authorities concerned to decongest Pollachi roads by making a few roads `one way' and removing encroachments on either side of the roads. The meeting urged the Government to revise the guideline value of lands in and around Pollachi, which, it alleged, was higher than the market rate. And, installing a touch screen at the sub-registrar office would be helpful for people to know the rates.

The Chamber's demands include setting up of a Pollachi Planning Committee under the chairmanship of the sub-collector to work on overall development of the town and opening of a tourism office in Pollachi to tap the potential of this region.

Vice-presidents G.D. Gopalakrishnan, Ramasamy and Rangasamy attended the meeting. Secretary Kannan presented the annual report. The meeting thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for introducing value added tax, abolishing the resale tax and establishing a Government College in Valparai.
