PUDUKOTTAI: Students from rural areas evinced keen interest in participating in elocution and essay-writing competitions on topics involving Tamil literature.

The competitions on Silapadhigaram, organised jointly by the Silapadhigara Aanmeeka Peravai and the JCI Pudukottai Sangamam, here recently, centred around Kannagi and Madhavi.

Divided into three categories, the competitions were held for students of VI-VIII, IX-XII and college students. In all, 70 students from 30 schools and a few colleges in the district participated. “We were surprised to find that a large number of students hailed from schools located in rural areas,” said the organisers.

Prizes were later distributed to winners. Speakers appreciated the endeavour of the Peravai in motivating the students to participate in the contests, which would not only improve their knowledge of Tamil literature but also imbue a sense of discipline and courage.

Peravai organiser Sowmiyanarayana Swamigal, JCI Pudukototai Sangamam president T. Ravichandran and scholar Aruivudainambi were among those who spoke.
