Members of various organisations distribute sweets
The Southern Railway has begun implementing the provision of a stop for the newly-introduced Coimbatore-Tirupati Express at Erode railway junction from Sunday.
Members of the Salem Division Railway Users Consultative Committee (SDRUCC), Congress workers and members of various organisations distributed sweets to the passengers of the train, when it arrived at the Junction on Sunday morning. Congress workers along with devotees proceeding to Tirupati performed a puja in front of the train.
The railway administration, earlier, did not include Erode and Tirupur railway stations in the list of stoppages for the train, which came as a disappointment to a large number of people in Erode and neighbouring Tirupur districts. Erode MP A. Ganesamurthy and SDRUCC members raised this issue with senior officials of Southern Railway and also wrote to the Union Railway Ministry demanding provision of stoppage at Erode. Congress workers staged demonstrations as the railway administration's decision would affect thousands of devotees in Erode and Tirupur districts. Following the repeated representations, the Southern Railway created the provision of stoppage at Erode and Tirupur. Meanwhile, SDRUCC members said that the Southern Railway had created the provision of stoppage for the train at Erode only for a period of six months. They appealed to the railway authorities to announce permanent stoppage at Erode.
