“Steps should be taken to protect

the foodgrains

from rains”

CHENNAI: The Food Minister, E.V. Velu, has asked the Civil Supply Department officials to ensure that there was adequate stock of foodgrains in godowns.

At a review meeting held here recently to ascertain the stock, Mr. Velu said steps should be taken to protect the foodgrains from rains.

Tarpaulin covers should be provided to cover essential goods while transporting them in lorries.

Route charts

Officials should ensure that the lorries displayed the route charts in the vehicles and only then they could allow the vehicles to leave the godowns, the Minister said.

Zonal managers should personally inspect the modern and regular rice mills, besides checking the grinding agents.

Every month they should visit the ration shops to check whether the grains sent from the godowns were being sold to the people.

Similarly, the managers should check the quality of rice, its moisture content and polish.

Services of women self-help groups should be utilised for making plastic covers required for parcelling grocery items, he said.
