CHENNAI: The State Government has hiked the extra time remuneration of jail warders to make it on a par with that of police constables, Minister for Revenue and Law I. Periasamy said on Tuesday.
Concluding the debate on the demand for grants to Revenue and Law departments, he said the daily extra time remuneration of warders would go up from the present Rs.100 to Rs.150. It would entail an expenditure of Rs. 39.74 lakh.
The monthly washing allowance of Grade I and Grade II warders in sub-jails, open jail, special sub-jails and district jails would be increased from Rs. 30 to Rs. 100. This would involve an expenditure of Rs. 13.47 lakh.
Chicken with lunch
Mr. Periasamy also announced that all inmates in central prisons and other jails would get 115 gm of chicken with their lunch once a week. The provision was not applicable to `A' and other special class prisoners. The Government would incur Rs. 87.9 lakh annual expenditure.
The policy note submitted by the Minister said construction of district jails at Srivaikundam, Nagercoil and Dindigul had been completed and would be commissioned shortly.
