This will improve the level of motivation and commitment

NAMAKKAL: Steps should be initiated to improve the quality and relevance of teacher education, Periyar University Vice-Chancellor T. Balakrishnan has said.

Addressing students at the convocation of Gnanamani College of Education, Pachal, here on Thursday, he said that despite several efforts, the development of pedagogic competencies of teacher educators and teachers remained poor. Effective teacher education would enhance the level of motivation and commitment of teachers.

The teacher education programmes should be framed in tune with the school curriculum framework, he said.

Stating that the future of education was going to be very challenging, he said that there was an urgent need to enhance the quality teacher education.

The teachers' job these days were like that of an instructor to provide guidance, suggest resources, field questions and provide outside expertise for particular learning tasks. He urged the graduates to create an atmosphere for smooth learning and set examples for the younger generation to follow, he said.

A good teacher is one who is a determined individual with a sense of kindness, good memory, and humour, he added. Pointing out that the world had become too competitive, he said that the intelligent, the sincere and the hardworking alone could survive.

Later, he conferred the degrees on the graduates. College Chairman T. Arangannal, presiding over the function, said that the college had registered cent per cent results in the university examinations. Principal S. Arokyasamy also spoke.
