Residents of Muthukrishnapuram stage road roko
Tuticorin: An encroachment drive began on Tuesday in view of desilting works being taken up for the execution of the much-awaited Buckle Canal at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.98 crore.
Residents of Muthukrishnapuram staged a road roko in front of corporation office over removal of huts on Wednesday. They demanded a make-shift housing arrangement with immediate effect.
AIADMK councillors met the Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam and objected to the encroachment drive.
Despite warning and notice, the residents were reluctant to shift their houses. Police rushed to the spot and pacified them. It was made clear that appropriate measures would be taken to accommodate them elsewhere.
A bhoomi puja was performed by the Minister for Social Welfare, P. Geetha Jeevan, on January, 16, 2009.
The first phase of work was expected to be completed by December, 2009.
