Forest officials on Tuesday seized six elephant tusks and arrested three persons. Officials said that during a vehicle check at Sirumugai Mudaku region on Mettupalayam – Kothagiri Road, they intercepted a motorcycle and found tusks being carried in a bag. Investigation revealed that Sampath (27) of Sirumugai, an agriculturist, was asked to sell the tusks by Kanagaraj (33) and Selvaraj (30).

Officials raided the house of the duo and arrested them. Kanagaraj and Selvaraj said that they had extracted the tusks from a dead elephant in the forest area, six months ago. They had buried the tusks in the forest area and had taken out for selling recently. The three were arrested by the officials and the tusks were seized.

The Forest Department officials on Thursday seized 195 kg of sandalwood worth Rs. 2.5 lakh at Nallur check post in Pollachi, and arrested two persons.

When forest officials tried to intercept a car at the check post, the vehicle did not stop. Officials chased the vehicle and found it abandoned near Mapillai Gounden Pudur. The persons in the car escaped. Officials seized the sandalwood kept in 13 gunny bags. The police later arrested Palanisamy (25) and Deepak Kumar (27) of Tirumurthy Nagar.
