A female elephant was found dead at Anthiyur Forest Range in Erode District on Saturday.

A team of forest personnel, while patrolling, found a 12-year-old elephant dead in Sevikuttai area and informed District Forest Officer Jagannathan and senior officials.

The animal could have died due to natural causes one or two days ago. The exact cause of the death was yet to be ascertained, officials here said. Veterinarian Arjunan conducted the post-mortem examination and the carcass was left in the forests as such for the vultures to feed on.

The decision to leave the carcass to scavenger birds was taken after consulting with senior officials in the forest department.
