The carcass of a male elephant was found deep inside the jungles in Bhavani Sagar Range in Erode district on Monday.
A team of forest personnel, while patrolling, found the carcass near Uppupallam, which is deep inside the Bhavani Sagar forest range. The carcass was barely intact, as the scavengers had eaten most part of it.
“The animal, aged 7-8 years, could have died 10 days ago due to natural causes,” District Forest Officer N. Satheesh said.
Forest officials found the tusks intact and retrieved them.
The post-mortem was conducted in the presence of Conservator of Forests, Erode circle, D. Arun, and officials from the WWF.
The remaining of the carcass was left for the forest scavengers to feed on.
