    DINDIGUL: Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be introduced in the next local body elections. In the first phase, EVMs will be introduced in 25 per cent of the total panchayats in the State, said the State Election Commissioner, R. Chadrasekaran.

    Talking to media persons after taking part in a review meeting held at Palani on Thursday, he said the purchase of electronic voting machines for local body elections would commence after the forthcoming polls to fill the existing vacancies in the local bodies scheduled to be held on February 8.

    There are 533 posts, including two district ward councils, five panchayat union councils, 33 village panchayat presidents, 451 village panchayat ward members, one corporation council ward, one municipal council ward, five third grade municipal council wards, and 35 town panchayat council, are vacant in the State.

    Steps have been taken to prepare a panchayat-wise voter list forcivic polls to avoid missing of any names.

    Earlier, the State Election Commissioner took part in the review committee meeting and discussed the arrangements made for the forthcoming polls. The Collector, R. Vasuki, the Superintendent of Police A. Pari and Revenue officials took part in the meeting.

    Later, Mr. Chandrasekaran visited the Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy hill temple and took part in special poojas.
