A 70-year-old woman was relieved of her gold jewels weighing five sovereigns at Tirupattur on Thursday.

According to police, Shakuntala, a resident of Tirupattur, was going to a temple, when two women pretending to ask for directions stopped her near the RTO office. Entering into a conversation with her, one of the women had secretly dropped a currency note on the road. The two persuaded her that they could share the money and took her to a desolate spot.

A man, who police believe was part of the gang, claimed that it was his money but left after an argument with the women. The duo then asked the elderly woman to remove her jewels and keep them safely in a bag and also put the money into it. The man had returned to them demanding the money, when the women had taken the bag from Shakuntala and handed over the money to him. They then escaped from the spot with the bag, police said.
