ERODE: Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry E.V.K.S. Elangovan has pleaded with the State Government to send a letter to the Centre seeking grant of Scheduled Tribes status to Malayalis and Lambadis.

In a press release issued on Saturday, he said that in Thalawady, Kadambur, Kuthiyalathur and Burgur in Gobichettipalayam parliament constituency, hundreds of tribals belonging to Malayali and Lambadi sects were living.

Their relatives residing in Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Dharmapuri and Namakkal forest areas had been brought under Scheduled Tribe category and provided community certificate.

Request forwarded

Mr. Elangovan said based on the representation from the tribal people, he had forwarded the request to Union Minister for Tribal Welfare Kiddiyah, who had agreed to grant ST status to them. But, he (Kiddiyah) wanted the State Government's proposal for it.

Avail benefits

He appealed to the Chief Minister to send the recommendation for declaring the sects as ST, so that they may also avail all the concessions and benefits given to the community people in other places.
