CHENNAI: Eight persons were arrested by the Neelankarai police on Thursday in connection with the murder of a person whose body was found with multiple stab injuries near Muttukadu on Monday night.

A special team formed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) R. Tirugnanam identified the victim as B. Salim (25) of Karayanchavidi in Poonamallee. Investigation revealed that Salim, who was working as an automobile mechanic in Mumbai in the last few years, had come here a fortnight ago.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thoraipakkam) K.N. Murali, who led the team, said that the victim had gone to Zam Bazaar area to meet his friend, G. Dawood Basha (30).

The two were involved in various crimes in the Arumbakkam, Chindadripet and Anna Salai areas a few years ago and were even detained under the Goondas Act.

Salim went to Mumbai after his release while Dawood joined a political party and became its South Chennai district president.

Knowing that Salim had come to see him, Dawood feared that he might commit offence and implicate him. His friends also advised him that Salim had come to stay in Chennai and his presence would be a deterrent to his political career.

Following this, Dawood and his relatives A. Imran Sharif (21) of Ezhil Nagar in Korukkupet and I. Syed Zabiullah (23) of Triplicane conspired to murder Salim.

On Monday, Dawood brought Salim on his motorcycle to Muttkadu on the pretext of going to a mosque in Mahabalipuram while Imran, Zabiullah and their friends Munwar Hussain (33), Gafoor Basha (34), Liayakat Hussain (28) and John Basha alias Sandhu were waiting at a secluded place.

As soon as Salim arrived there, the accused stabbed Salim indiscriminately killing him on the spot.

Gnana Irudhayaraj (28), driver of the autorickshaw used by the gang, was also arrested.

The autorickshaw and motorcycle used to commit the murder were seized. All the eight accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, Mr. Murali said.
