Tirupur: Following large number of petitions received from the public, the district administration has enhanced steps to disburse the ration cards to the eligible applicants at the earliest for ensuring food security to the poor. Official sources told The Hindu that as on June 5, 6,91,384 ration cards were in circulation under the 626 fair price shops situated in the district.

Segment wise

Of them, 2,38,886 cards were issued in Tirupur taluk, 92,905 in Avinashi taluk, 67,410 in Palladam taluk, 1,28,040 in Udumalpet taluk, 93,213 in Dharapuram taluk and 70,929 in Kangayam taluk.

The family cards issued in the district included 42,751 AAY (Antodaya Anna Yojana) cards, 564 police cards, 1,443 no commodity cards, 5,63,200 green cards (all commodities) and 83,426 white cards (all commodities except rice). Sources said that rice off-take under the public distribution system in the district stands at about 65 per cent.
