Efforts are under way to readmit the 634 school dropouts identified across Karur district during the special enumeration exercise carried out recently.

Under the auspices of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, there have been endeavours to adhere to the Right to Free and Compulsory Education for All as a part of which the number of school dropouts in the district was identified. Special teachers, teacher trainers and educators were deputed in each of the eight panchayat unions in the district to screen every household and identify the dropouts.

In Karur Union a total of 166 dropouts were identified in the exercise undertaken with the help of 195 teacher trainers and 67 special teachers.

Similarly in Thanthoni Union a total of 139 dropouts were identified in the screening done through 121 teacher trainers and 45 special teachers.

In the Aravakurichi Union, a total of 184 dropouts were enumerated with the help of 92 teacher trainers and 57 special teachers while in the K. Paramathi Union 104 such students were brought ashore in the exercise involving 95 teacher trainers and 45 special teachers.

Likewise in Krishnarayapuram Union 275 school dropouts were identified in the screening effort in which 131 teacher trainers and 57 special teachers were deployed. In Kadavur Union a total of 313 school dropouts were located while in Kulithalai 183 students were identified. In the backward Thogamalai Union 381 school dropouts were identified during the exercise.

Of the total students who had dropped out of schooling recorded in the district, a total of 634 dropouts aged between six and 14 and fit to be readmitted to schools would be taken back into the education fold.

Of them 383 are boys and the rest 251 are girls. They would be accommodated in the schools and special schools nearby their locations so that they could be imparted special coaching to help them join the mainstream course in due course, according to SSA sources.
