SALEM: Efforts would be made to provide free bicycles to the students from Standard VIII, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has said here.
Inaugurating the distribution of free bicycles to Plus I students in the district at a function held at Ammapet Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School here on Thursday, he said that the Collector had suggested if the students of Class VIII provided free bicycles, they could utilise them for five years, till completing their higher secondary.
This would also help prevent students from dropping out from schools. The Minister promised that the suggestion would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister and necessary efforts in this connection would be made.
The Minister said that the progress of a society highly depended on the education of its people.
Students particularly those in the rural areas should take full advantage of government schemes.Students should strive hard to improve their skills and achieve in their field of interest.
Stating that the State Government was implementing a number of schemes to improve the education standard, he appealed to the parents to send their children to schools.
Later, the Minister distributed a total of 1,281 bicycles to the students of Ammapet Corporation Boys HSS, Corporation Girls HSS, Bharathi Vidhyalaya HSS, St. Paul HSS and Manakkadu Kamarajar Corporation HSS. Collector N. Mathivanan presided over the function.
Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini, Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam and Chief Educational Officer S. Sethurama Varma were present.
