Udhagamandalam: Efforts are on to improve cell phone services of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited in the Nilgiris, particularly in Udhagamandalam, said G. Satyanarayana Reddy, Deputy General Manager, BSNL.
He told The Hindu here on Saturday that it was brought to his notice that for the last few days, subscribers in Udhagamandalam were facing problems such as inability to get the numbers they wanted, wrong in-coming calls and cross talks. They were caused by `mismatch of frequency' and congestion in certain towers.
They were being set right, Mr. Reddy said.
He said that within a fortnight, newly erected towers near the municipal market and the Ooty lake would be commissioned. Refuting the charge that BSNL provided connections far in excess of the capacity, Mr. Reddy said the situation was monitored daily. As many as 50,000 connections were given so far and the capacity was 75,000. While the number of persons waiting for pre-paid connections in the district was 5,000, in Udhagamandalam alone it was about 2,000. He expressed hope that by the end of February, the waiting list would be cleared.
